This makes me think of Edgar Rice Burroughs, even before the golden era of what we would call science fiction in the 30s. John Carter of Mars. Chastment of Mars, yeah, Princess of Mars. The Barsoomian Adventures was that somebody, John Carter, left Earth, some way, ends up on Mars, and there's a whole civilization there.
